Outdated Misconceptions About SEO

 

SEO 5Oh, where to start?  There are so many misconceptions and old wives’ tales about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that it is a mystery on deciding where to begin!  But I’ll try to knock the wind out of the sails of a few of the most egregious and misleading ones here and now.

To begin with let’s talk about the various search engines and what they do. That might help us to focus on the SEO process and the reasons for it.  If you don’t mind, I’ll keep referring to Google for simplicity’s sake.  It’s always important to keep in mind the mission of Google and what they are trying to do.  They are providing a service that will let a consumer punch in a few words in a search box about what they are trying to find and then to deliver several sites than can deliver to that consumer the information he or she is looking for.  Nothing more, nothing less.  Keeping that in mind, let’s go on.  Gentlemen, start your engines.

Nobody Wants To Use Your Product!

I ran across this piece this morning on Twitter, and I thought that I’d write a bit about it and then let the author, , explain to you the essence of why people really use your product and how to make it work better for them.  Goran’s article appeared in Smashing Magazine.  That’s an online mag where I have found many, many good, informative articles.

The bottom line is that people don’t actually want to use your product.  They want the results of using your product.  If you think about it, that makes sense, right?

A CUP OF COFFEE

coffee 2For instance, let’s say you’re running low on your favorite decaf coffee.  (OK, and maybe a muffin to go with it.)  You go to Google and do a search for decaf coffee.  But what you really want is a cup of that decaf coffee.

You really don’t want to use Google, as invaluable as it may be, and you don’t want to go to the decaf coffee website, though it is someplace you have to go to get that end result of a cup of that decaf coffee, and you don’t want to go through the contortions of credit card hell to pay for it, even though that’s one of the steps you have to wiggle your way through.  You want a cup of your favorite coffee!
